Kick off your Fourth of July with the national bird, the Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus)! The Museum’s Bald Eagle Diorama depicts a scene set near Alaska’s Chilkat River. Around November, when the chum salmon spawn and then die, Bald Eagles old and young congregate in numbers to feed upon salmon carcasses. This majestic bird of prey has a wide range throughout North America, soaring high in the sky with a wingspan of up to 8.5 ft (2.6 m)! 

You can spot this raptor in the Hall of North American Birds. The Museum is open today from 10 am–5:30 pm! Plan your visit.

earlier this month i had the amazing opportunity to spend a week in southeastern alaksa for school (the last 3 credits of my associate's degree program!) learning about the ecology and history of the region.

it was a completely fucking jam-packed 8 days of hiking, tidepooling, fishing, kayaking, sightseeing and immersing in a part of the country you literally can't drive to (only fly or boat to). and at the end of it all i was able to contribute a little piece of my art to the lodge, presenting Salmuel the giant papier mâché salmon to our lovely hosts as thanks!! it was truly an unforgettable experience and the perfect capstone to my little degree program.

...but i think next time i have to bring a delicate art piece on a plane, i'll make one that's a little smaller and easier to handle LOL

have yet to stop thinking about the plane ride to Barcelona, aka the worlds most awkward plane ride in the world. Like who do we think sat together? Did Devon talk to any of them, like is she’s friends with any of the other teens? Did Eli and demetri drag other people into their drama, was demetri very obviously trying to avoid Eli, messing up the assumed plane seating arrangements? Was Robby brooding over his missing girlfriend and her dead mom the whole time? Were Daniel and Johnny still beefing or do we think they tried to save face for the kids? Is there any chance that Miguel and Sam were able to just have a nice time hanging out with each other on the flight or did they get dragged into everyone else’s drama? I’m so obsessed with the logistics of the Barcelona trip, not to mention the flight is like 11 hours long if it’s non-stop. it sounds like the trip from hell
